Carols and Variety Concert

18 December 2004 - Carols

Community choirs from the area by candlelight.

2 January 2005 - From Porter (Cole) to Bob (Dylan):
visiting some jazz & folk standards & investigating a few jazz & guitar originals

Five musicians in a varied, accessible and juxtaposed programme of vocal and instrumental jazz, folk music and guitar instrumentals.

Vocalist extraordinaire Jacques Coetzee leads the band, drummer John Pringle, bassist Heini Jack and keyboardist Ramon Alexander through a tribute of famous Cole Porter songs such as ‘Under my skin’.

Coetzee and guitarist Johann Kotze, as duo or backed by the band, sings Bob Dylan perennials such as ‘Blowin’ in the wind’, and makes epics such as ‘All along the watchtower’ rock in a most refreshing manner. A touch of Leonard Cohen and Crosby, Stills and Nash completes the folk aspect of the programme.

The virtuoso band are as much at home delivering interpretations of evergreen jazz standards like ‘Autumn leaves’ as their own evocative originals.

Johann Kotze’s compositions for solo acoustic guitar or ensemble are melodic and rhythmically challenging, infused with stylistic influences of world music from blues to folk to classical.

Produced and arranged by Johann Kotze.
