Dylan tribute 2004

at V&A Waterfront

The annual Bob birthday tribute is eaxactly 2 months overdue this year.
It follows in the wake of an impromto performance at the Hidden Cellar in May,
when Jacques appeared as guest of the 'Johann Kotze band' and delivered his usual mindblowing vocals over a slow-burning kick-ass beat by bass and drum (Johan Papendorp & John Pringle) amplifying Johann's unusual arrangements of the Dylan classics.
'One more cup of coffee' and 'All along the watchtower' rang and rolled like never before.

A Dylan tribute

Dylan reinventers Jaqcues Coetzee (vocal) & Johann Kotze (guitar & vocal) give recognition to the great works of Bob Dylan in what is more than just another tribute.

Some of the hits, many of the anthems, and many surprises from 40 years of the song writing legend feature in this honest, raw to the bone and finely crafted acoustic guitar and vocal harmony interpretations. Ramon Alexander (piano) and John Pringle (drums) more than fills out the band.

But if you want somebody singing just like Dylan, listen to Dylan. These guys are no mere imitators. They believe nobody but Dylan can sound like Dylan. They interpret him, creating a unique selection of styles. The harmonies are folk, but the classically trained tenor of Coetzee makes every word audible, makes every line soar. Sometimes he even reads a Dylan song like poetry in a voice that sings. Or don’t be surprised when Johann and Jacques do ‘Shelter from the Storm’ with just an African drumbeat as backing, or when the piano and vocals take on a jazz rendition of Dylan as never heard before.

The Dylan tribute played successfully at the Baxter in 1999, and the annual Bob Dylan birthday tribute in Stellenbosch has become a fixture there ever since.
